Emotions are flying high on this Tuesday, November 19th, as New Yorkers wake up to see the historic 5Pointz painted over. 5Pointz, better known as the mecca for graffiti artists all over the world including work of some 1,500 artists, was wiped clean in matter of one night.
For years, the owners of the property had plans to turn this historical building into a development project. And while many were against it, the likelihood of that project happening continued to grow. Protests were held throughout the year at the location and at city hall but it was no fight against the profit. Even the world-renowned street artist Banksy, ended his monthlong residency in New York with the words, “save 5Pointz.”
The unofficial curator of 5Pointz, Marie Cecile Flageul said it best, “We are supposed to be the vandals, but this is the biggest rag and disrespect in the history of graffiti.”
The building is scheduled for demolition by end of year.
