Formerly known as Buff1 and hailing from the crew which spawned DJ Haircut aka Mayer Hawthorne, Jamall Bufford has graced us with the world premiere of his latest release, “Loser.”
Steeped on multiple levels of nostalgic audio and visual interpolations ranging from the hook on Beck’s “Loser” to Hughes’ “Sixteen Candles,” Bufford’s modern interpretation of classic boom-bap sonics is married to director’s Andy Madeleine visual direction, which lends the track a certain level of gravitas as it tackles the song’s theme of ‘success’ and it’s relation to life and the rap game. The video’s reverent playfulness belie the lyrics intellectual look at the modern definition of what it means to be in the ‘game.’
The second single off of his latest album, Victim of A Modern Age, Bufford is just the latest bright point from label Mello Music Group which has recently touted Dudley Perkins, Oddisee, Apollo Brown, and Georgia Ann Muldrow amongst their releases. With the quality of this stable and from what we seen and heard thus far, we can’t wait to see what Mr. Bufford and his mates drop next.
