Presented By EA
EA Games hosted a launch party for Titanfall, created by Respawn, at SXSW on March 10. We were one of the lucky ones invited to check out the event—lucky in that the line was around the block. The launch definitely attracted more than the avid gamer, as the SXSW crowd presented a varied cross section more akin to the premiere of a blockbuster movie.
Before we get into the event, Titanfall is a first-person shooter that takes place in a war-torn planet with mech-style Titans and their pilots. Some of the creators are originally creators of the best Call of Duty games, so basically it’s a new and improved Call of Duty, which takes place is a science-fictional world. The game is already creating a buzz in the gaming community—winning over 75 awards already—so you know it’s legit.
Me, personally, I’m a sports video game type of guy but I’ll have to admit, the set up was rad. They had 36 playable stations with really posh executive chairs, all set up to look like a military command center. All the gamers were stoked. EA also set up this life-size (more like robot-size) robot outside for photo ops.
The best part of the night was that the game engineers were present and super active with the fans. They were constantly reminding the gamers to send emails, comment, and participate in discussion boards to send feedback back to EA, in order to improve on Titanfall 2. An awesome way to establish relationships with your community and create that fan loyalty. Right on!
The event was capped by a performance from none other than Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino. He came out to a rowdy crowd, performing some of his popular songs along with some new ones from his upcoming project. Funny part is, while he was rapping, there were still plenty of people playing the games. I’d say that’s a win for EA.
Titanfall is available now on Xbox One.
