This past weekend at SXSW was undeniably one for the books. We spent each day hopping from one showcase to the next, making new friends, trading stories, sipping that sweet Texas lemonade (that may or may not have been spiked with moonshine) and most importantly, discovering some of the best music with some of the best people.
SXSW is known for its amazing shows, but their afterparties are legendary. Luckily for us, the URB crew was invited to attend The ILLMORE, one of the most exclusive SXSW afterparty events produced by famous rap blog The ILLROOTS and Austin-based promotion company ScoreMore Shows. With past performances from some of the biggest names in new music including MACKELMORE, DIPLO, WIZ KHALIFA, STEVE AOKI, ZEDD, KENDRICK LAMAR, A$AP ROCKY, and CHANCE THE RAPPER, The ILLMORE has grown to become the only SXSW afterparty that matters.
We arrived at the secret address given to us shortly after midnight on Thursday March 14 (technically Friday morning), only to find ourselves at a bowling alley/skate rink transformed into a regular concert get up. This night at The ILLMORE in particular was curated by Los Angeles-based record label/lifestyle brand Dim Mak Records. Upon arrival, we witnessed a special DJ set and crowd-hyping performance from Grammy-nominated electronic music producer Steve Aoki that included his signature cake throws and crowd-surfing in rubber boats. There were also appearances from artists such as OG Chase B, DJ Mr. Rogers, Brenmar, LOUDPVCK, Chuck Inglish, G-Eazy, Dom Kennedy, Robb Bank$, Casey Veggies, Future, and more. Big ups to Dim Mak, The ILLROOTS, and ScoreMore Shows, for curating one of the best open-format, hip hop meets EDM nights we’ve experienced in awhile. Check out our recap gallery and experience the madness of this night!
