For many, the first thought that comes to mind when you hear “Afrobeat” is Fela Kuti. Kuti is known as the creator of the genre back in the 70’s and while we celebrate his legacy now more than ever, most people today would only associate Afrobeat to the musical presented by Jay-Z and the Smith’s but the truth is, Afrobeat has had such a bigger impact on contemporary music; from influencing jazz musicians for generations to modern musicians such as Brian Eno and David Byrne (Talking Heads). To describe it in the most simplistic way, the genre is a fusion of African music and some contemporary music styles. So it only makes sense for someone like DJ Center to come out with Dem Say Ah. For years, DJ Center and his label Push The Fader has been known to push the boundaries on music genres, providing a very fun and upbeat experience. A seasoned DJ veteran, Center is very knowledgeable and adept in many genres from across the globe beyond Afrobeat and he uses his expertise to put together an international masterpiece. Today, we take a look into how this new project came into fruition and learn a little more about the talented musician.
