Friday Fresh: SF Producer, REL releases Janet Jackson Tribute “Janet Flips” Mixtape

By Audrey Esperanza · On May 16, 2014

Words by Audrey Esperanza

Who doesn’t love Janet? She has been an iconic pop figure for years; influencing and redefining popular music since the late 80’s and is one of the world’s most awarded musician and artist. She is known for a series of sonically innovative, socially conscious and sexually provocative records as well as elaborate stage shows, television appearances and film roles. Janet Jackson holds a record of over thirty Billboard Awards and is the only artist in history to receive Grammy nominations spanning five different genres. Her film career has garnered industry recognition, receiving MTV Movie Awards and Image Awards. The woman is a definite heavy hitter and we are celebrating her birthday today the only way we know how: URB’s Friday Fresh brought to you by REL.

REL is a producer from San Francisco, currently living in Brooklyn, NY and previously dropped a new mix earlier this month titled Janet Flips composed of remixes produced by himself and other producers such as Rey Ruccio, Jansoulo, Disclosure and countless others. When I first had the mix land on my lap by the homie, GetLive Ro, I already knew it was going to be fire, and it was. Every track is flipped so hard with flawless transitions that I think even Janet would be extremely impressed. REL’s previous releases include Out Of View, a beat tape released through Bay Area record label SWTBRDS and MVMNT: a collaboration album with SF based rapper JBillion. REL is also known for hosting and producing the 10 year running hip hop show, Distortion 2 Static which aired its last show in 2011.
