It’s been quite a while since we’ve done a Surroundings piece on URB — a piece where we open up our eyes and see what certain artists do, where they go to find inspiration, and where they just need to clear their minds out of the gutter to get back to solid ground. For a minute (OK — more than a minute) we were rattling around our brains who would be the right artist to bring this back onto the radar, and then we heard Dumb Flesh by Benjamin John Power, aka Blanck Mass (out now on Sacred Bones). After hearing a brilliant menagerie of molten effects-laden, noise-squelched dance entropy within his record, we knew that he would be the perfect person to give a widened perspective within the concept of a Surroundings feature. As half of the venerable live-electronic madness that is Fuck Buttons, Power has been all about the world but has now taken up residence in Edinburgh, where we start this feature. However, as he will tell us shortly, his most cherished time is spent on opposite ends of the United States, Glasgow and somewhere we know all too well. More after the jump.
EDINBURGH CASTLE (Edinburgh, Scotland)
“For the first 6 months of relocation to Edinburgh, I was living in town on the top floor in an apartment. My studio was set up here and if and when I needed a break, I would walk outside onto my balcony to a clear view of Edinburgh castle. It’s actually very beautiful when you’re up by the castle itself, with a great view out to the Pentlands. As the seasons change, so do the colored lights which illuminate the castle at night time.”
29 PALMS INN (Twentynine Palms, CA)
On the last Fuck Buttons tour we had a week off between coasts. I decided to drive out to check out the Joshua Tree for a few days with my wife and we stayed at the 29 Palms. Having only really hit the major cities on this tour it was a heavy contrast being surrounded by nothing but desert and sky — a chance to celebrate the beauty in isolation. You take in the smaller things, the dusty haze, the solitary tree. Cities don’t allow you to do that.
