On Oct 7th, Los Angeles producer Bei Ru will release his instrumental album “L.A. ZOOO” via Musa Ler Music / Fat Beats. The album is Bei Ru’s first instrumental beat concept record which incorporates everything from bugged-out Middle Earnest melodies from the 1970s to obscure electronic, funk, jazz and soul.
A child of Lebanese parents, Bei Ru recounts inheriting his parents record collection which included old Armenian records which he at first did not appreciate until later when he started to produce beats. Influenced by Los Angeles hip hop and the city itself, “L.A. ZOOO” incorporates the idea of LA, the city, as a caricature of its own where humans and animals are not all that different. As he states in an interview with Gabriel Murillo from Passion of the Weiss: “People get killed all the time, people get robbed all the time so it’s the same as the animal kingdom.” You can check out the full interview here.
In preparation of the upcoming album release, check out Bei Ru’s “L.A. ZOOO Pre-Flight” mix which is curated from records he found while on tour in the Middle East in 2015 alongside records bought from various record stores in LA. The music in the mix inspired and shaped what eventually became the LA ZOOO album.
