URB Presents the First Ever ‘Mixtape Series’ feat. DJ Platurn (The Outkast Mix)

By Jason Chang @hurryupnbuy · On April 10, 2014

Dating back over two years, URB Magazine has been curating a podcast series featuring the electronic DJs and producers around the world. These artists were carefully chosen by our staff and showcased for our readers to see. After 143 podcasts and nearly 4k followers, we’ve achieved our goals as purveyors of talented (and sometimes unknown) electronic musicians. With the recent relaunch of our website, we have decided to add an additional element to the podcast series, dubbing it “URB Mixtape Series.”

For this portion of our podcasts, we’ll handpick a mix of popular and unknown DJs and producers to provide a mixtape for our fans to enjoy. Today, we are honored to present the first ever “URB Mixtape Series” mix by DJ Platurn. We approached the founder of Oakland Faders to create a mix that would coincide with Outkast and their comeback performance at Coachella (it’s only fitting). If you’re unfamiliar with Platurn, his resume speaks for itself. The Oakland-based DJ/producer has traveled all over the world, sharing his musical interpretation to some of the biggest parties and concerts. His peers include some of the biggest names in hip hop and DJing, such as De La Soul, DJ Q-bert, DJ Shadow, Pete Rock and MF Doom to name a few. He also served as a blog guru for the popular DJ outlet, Mixcrate but don’t let our praise of him get you. Just listen to the mix above and you can make your assessment.

Some words from the DJ:
“Had a blast revisiting one of the most prolific Hip-Hop groups of all time. I was always a big fan, but there’s a unique perspective you acquire on a group when you dive into their catalog via piecing together a detailed DJ mix. Them ATL boys span the gamut of diversity in this rap and soul thing — claiming that they’re versatile is a severe understatement. The genius of Organized Noize couldn’t have been a better fit either. The marriage of music and voice with Andre, Big Boi, and that dirty dungeon they recorded in were the makings of some of the funkiest and soulful rap music to ever come out of the South, or all of rap music for that matter. I took it all over the place, as I tend to do, but I focused almost solely on tracks that Sir Luscious & Mr. Benjamin both appeared on, and as much variety as I could fit in between for that added Platurn effect. Crumble up some erb and lean back for this one.”

*Note: this is by no means an authoritative mix on the duo, simply my meager interpretation — there were even some joints that I couldn’t fit that my faves, unfortunately. I hope the attempt still does them justice.
