ASTR: A Girl/Guy Band From NYC (Exclusive Interview)
Who is ASTR?
ASTR is a girl/guy band from NYC that formed 2 years ago.
What does ASTR stand for?
The name (pronounced As-Ter) is a name derived from Asteria, Greek goddess of the stars and, coincidentally, Astor Place NYC near where our first studio sessions went down.
How would you describe your music?
Moody blend of old school R&B songs and electronic production.
How did you guys meet?
We were introduced to each other at a Yoga studio in Manhattan through a mutual group of friends. Once we were around each other and had talked music we eventually got in the studio to work.
Who decided to do a cover on Drake’s “Hold On?”
Last fall when we were first heading out on the road we thought about going to a show to see a new artist and how tough it can be when very few people know your original songs. So we loved that record, which had just been on the radio for a short while, and decided to play it on tour. The response was so overwhelmingly positive that we made sure when we got home it was the first thing we cut in the studio. We were surprised how well it was received.
